All countries, including countries in Europe, have work to do at the national level in order to reach the goals. It is also a pleasure to share with you my passion for the 2030 Agenda and my enthusiasm for what the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can do for humanity. The international community witnessed a historic moment on September 25, 2015, when world leaders gathered at the United Nations to unanimously adopt the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).I had the opportunity to attend this event alongside 192 other young leaders and be a part of this important celebration. This endless reservoir of 1.3 billion cubic kilometres, covers over 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, and contains 97 percent of the Earth’s water. The question before us, though, as an international community, is how do we meet these new goals that we’ve set today? HIV/AIDS infections and deaths have plummeted. (Applause.) And they’re willing to work hard, and their parents love them just as much as we love ours. But I visited Africa recently, and what I saw gave me hope and I know should give you hope, because that continent has made impressive gains in health and education. But they just need a little help. Not just in the way that our communication, our value chains and our financial systems are built … but also in the way that negative externalities can no longer be contained by national borders or by firewalls in our internet systems. The 2030 Agenda is to be driven by a system of reviews: o National reviews by the states to their people as part of a continuous nationally owned and lead accountability, and. And because of the work of so many who are assembled here today, we can point to past success. When women have an education, when women have a job, their children are more likely to get an education, their families are healthier and more prosperous. This next chapter of development cannot just be about what governments spend, it has to harness the unprecedented resources of our interconnected world. And combating illicit finance must be a global effort because it is part of our development effort. It belongs to everyone; it is a shared vision of humanity, promised to its people. So, what will it take to move to action?! And so, in all of our countries, we have to invest in the interventions that allow us to reach more people -- because no one should be left behind just because of where they live or what they look like. This recognition is what drove the adoption of the universal and transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To upholding the inherent dignity of every human being. where the capacity of oceans to provide their vital services, and the survival of the planet’s biodiversity, are at great risk. In just two months, the world has an opportunity to unite around a strong global agreement. We reaffirm that supporting development is not charity, but is instead one of the smartest investments we can make in our own future. 2. And to this end, the SDGs have shed new light on the importance of ethics, integrity, professionalism, effectiveness, and transparency of public administration. But perhaps because this is now my seventh year of addressing the General Assembly, I tend to be more blunt. Billions of our fellow human beings are at risk of dying from diseases that we know how to prevent. As His Holiness Pope Francis has rightly implored the world, this is a moral calling. A belief, a capacity in the dignity of every individual, and a recognition that we, each of us, can play a small part to play in lifting up people all around the world -- that is the message that we are sending here today. (Applause.) And citizens and civil society groups must be free to organize and speak their mind and work for progress, because that's how countries develop; that's how countries succeed. Tens of millions of more boys and girls are today in school. This should be a simple proposition, but it bears repeating. A strong multilateral system, along with financial and capacity support to countries most in need, is necessary to eliminate poverty and meet the SDGs. So I call on the world to join us as we mobilize billions of dollars in new trade and investment and development in Africa -- and that includes Power Africa, our initiative to bring electricity and greater opportunity to more than 60 million African homes and businesses. All of our countries will be affected by a changing climate. Beyond this, governments and public institutions at all levels must mobilize civil society, the business community and others in a broad effort to realize the SDGs. And guided by the new consensus we reached in Addis, I'm calling on others to join us. The progress of recent years gives us hope. I get 40,000 a day, but I read 10. The SDGs are not primarily an aid agenda. Sustainable Development cannot be achieved unilaterally / by one country! And while there is no standard approach for implementing the SDGs, and each country decides on its own path, the shifts in paradigm inherent to the 2030 Agenda compel us all to ask at least the following three sets of basic questions: 1. Are we leaving anyone behind? On the contrary, to actually establish national ownership, governments and institutions cannot work alone within their silos. We can break the cycle of poverty.
